Uniquely situated right by the seashore in a secluded and peaceful location, Fossil Cottage is a small, charming old croft house standing on the shores of a tidal estuary full of wildlife - otters and seals, seabirds and waders, rare orchids and many other fascinating natural features. The area is designated a Site of Scientific Interest for its geology and there are giant fossils nearby plus several smaller ones in the walls of the cottage. The local otter is a common sight on the shore close to the cottage.
There's an ammonite in the lintel above the old doorway.
At least 150 years old, Fossil Cottage is full of character and has been modernised to offer you tasteful comfort. From the big window in the sitting room you can spot the otters, watch the high tide lapping a few feet away, enjoy spectacular sunsets dramatically colouring the evening sky and admire herons standing like sentinels by the water's edge.
In spring you will be amused by the sheep and lambs waiting for the tide to go out to cross over to their moorland grazings.
The sheep wade, and lambs learn to swim only hours after being born.
In addition to the otter, you might see a seal swimming by on the tide just outside the window.
